Chiefly correspondence of Richard White while at Yale, on a European trip, and as a col. in the 55th Reg't. Pennsylvania Volunteers; with his father Thomas White his mother Catherine Brooks McConnell White, his brothers Henry Lloyd White and Alexander McConnell White, his sister Juliet White and his wife Katherine Podesta White. Letters deal with family news, descriptions of Richard's travels, Penn. and U.S. politics, and slightly with Richard's army service. Those between Richard and his wife are in German, with some translations. There is also correspondence between the above people. Other correspondents are: members of the Coffey family, Charles Durang a cousin of Richard's; William Herman a business associate; and members of the Podest family in Germany, esp. Louis Podesta. Materials pertaining to the 55th Reg't. Pa. Vol. consists of ordinance invoices, orders and letters to White, and his commission and discharge papers [ca. 60 items. cf. 7458-e]. Other items include newsclippings on Thomas and Henry Lloyd White, rememberances of Richard White by several men in his command, and genealogical information on the Coffey, Lloyd, and McConnell families.
